​The sport of golf originated in Scotland during the 15th century. The first 18 hole course was developed in 1764, more than 100 years before the first modern Olympiad was held in Athens in 1896. Despite being a global sport with a long history of international competition, golf has had a relatively short history with the Olympic Games.

Golf was not part of the 1896 program in Athens, but was included at the Paris games in 1900 as an official event. Athletes could compete in either the men’s or women’s individual events. It should be noted that the 1900 Olympics, the second modern Olympiad, were unique in that many of the winning athletes had no idea the multi-sport competition they were part of was an Olympiad competition.

Both the men’s and women’s events at the Paris Olympics were relatively short. Held at the Compiegne Club, women engaged a stroke play tournament over just nine holes, while the men played two rounds of 18 holes during one day of competition. The men’s tournament came down to a single stroke, with New York’s Charles Sands outlasting Walter Rutherford of Scotland. It was the second of the only two golf tournaments Sands ever played. Great Britain’s Charles B. MacDonald claimed the bronze medal.
